The first week of the 2006 MTP program was much more relaxed and afforded opportunities for more learning due mainly to familiarity with Japan and the program. Having been chosen to participate for the second consecutive year, I was less engaged in absorbing Japanese culture, sights, sounds, smells, and tastes, and more engaged in focusing on the program. In addition, because I had videoconferenced with my partners, the JFMFMTP office during Japanese lessons, and had corresponded with the JFMF office, it seemed like less time was spent getting caught up with the lives of old friends which allowed for more time to focus on the program.
I am certain that Dr. Jones, Elissa, and others explained things well last year, but I was so overwhelmed with life in a foreign country that I failed to understand the expectations of MTP. In addition, since most of this year's class had prior MTP experience, I was able to gain valuable insight from their experiences.
For the reasons stated above, the week in Tokyo was well spent. Some events such as the Tea Ceremony and the Scavenger Hunt, although experienced previously, were worthwhile because my more relaxed condition allowed me to glean more from those who were our hosts.
The trip to Kesennum was like going home. We were met at the train station by many of our good friends and colleagues. My science partner, Taka, even wore his cowboy hat.
We are even able to stay in the exact same apartments we stayed in last year, which made it seem even more like home. Friday and Saturday were spent getting settled. As I was shopping and buying groceries, many of the store clerks recognized me and greated me with big smiles. I was even able to go by my school on Friday and see a few of my old friends.
Today as I write this blog I feel totally at home. It is almost like I never left. This makes me believe the next month will be more productive than last year because I can stay focused on the work that must be done.
