Hi Jane,
I am so glad you are promoting onsen and baths. I have been scoping a few out here in Hokkaido, and hopefully will get a soak in this week. On Sunday I plan to travel to the Lake Toya region south of Sapporo for some hiking amongst the lava and onsen heaven. Speaking of onsen, I am wondering if JFMFMTP2006 Americans are interested in going to the onsen at Odaiba for our final evening in Tokyo? I have read about Oedo Onsen and will send more information to the listserve in the near future. I love your sense of humor with Japanese signage. Thanks! - Dave

Matsuyama sports the oldest onsen in Japan: Dogo Onsen. We soaked our weary bones there last week. The place would have been bulldozed except for the references to in in Botchan, the famous book about an exiled Tokyo teacher who is stuck in this hellhole for a year. It's a classic and all things Botchan are revered here now. People dressed as Botchan and Madonna (his main squeeze) are everywhere for photo opps with the flatlanders. For 800 yen you not only soak, but get a yukata, cool down room, rice cakes and tea. Good stuff. We'll be back. Jim McElroy
