I arrived in Sendai just fine. The apartment manager picked Nakamura and I up from the train station and took us to the apartment. It is a nice apartment. It is designed especially for short term stays so it has basically everything I need. It is like a hotel room with a kitchenette. We waited for Yao to arrive and then they took me to the 100 Yen shop and supermarket. Afterwards we went to dinner at a family restaurant.
On Saturday I started the day by going out exploring on my own using the map I was given. It worked quite well so I was able to find my way to the street mall and all the way to Sendai station. I then took the subway back up to my place. Yao came to my place at about 11 to show me the route to school. I take the subway for about 15 mins and then walk for about 15 minutes. We then took the subway to "The Mall" which is its actual name. We had lunch there at a Japanese restaurant. It was ok. He then showed me where the cinema is which is important to I can go see Pirates of the Carribean when it comes out this weekend. Afterwards I went home and then went back out to see if I could find the supermarket using the map which I did.
I saw on a tv a program especially for the deaf. It appears it is a news program. The hosts sign the daily news. I don't think TV shows are closed caption like in the states.
On Sunday Nakamura and his family picked me up. His wife's name is Harumi. He has a daughter Norino and two sons, Takanori and Yukinori. We drove to Hiraizumi. We visited the Chusonji Temple. It is beautifully covered in gold leaf and is enclosed in glass surroundings to protect it. We had lunch at a Japanese restaurant. We next went to the Genbikei Gorge. It was a beautiful natural site. Harumi ordered "dango" which are sent to you in a bamboo basket from across the river. A fun site to see but I didn't taste any! When we got back to Sendai we went to Nakamura's apartment and Harumi cooked a wonderful dinner. N's daughter and a friend will go to the US at the end of the July so I talked with them so they could practice their English. It was a delightful day!
I really appreciate the time Yao and Nakamura (and his family) have given me!

Hi Sherry,
I'm glad to see you're having a good time. The map idea sounds very good to suggest to future MTP JP teachers to provide to their partners! I think I'll bring it up when it's time to discuss next year's program. Thanks for sharing that.
I just thought I'd comment on the TV caption - we do in fact get TV captions on many channels/programs, but we need to get a special TV tuner to see them. If I recall correctly, they're not sold very often in "conventional" electronics stores, even the big ones in Akihabara. How do people access TV captions in the States?

Hi Elissa- Thanks for the reply and the information about the captioned TV.
In the states a law was passed about 8 years ago that requires every TV sold to have a chip that allows captioning. Before that we had the caption machines that you had to hook up to the TVs and like in Japan, they were only sold through special stores.
The news program I have seen in the evenings is very interesting though!
Thanks! Sherry
