Hello All, In late October, Vanderburg Elementary and our partner school Nanakuni Elementary conducted our second video conference. Early in the month, I mailed Mr. Nishiyamas' class an assortment of Halloween costumes which the students modeled during the conference and candies. I had thought that my partner's class was going to share the results of their bug study, but instead were treated to photos of an assortment of marine life taken during a recent field trip to an aquarium in the Tokyo area. This after-school conference was attended by some students from one of two of my fourth grade GATE classes. Many of the students also wore their Halloween costumes. Their presentation included a discussion of the origins of several Halloween traditions and three pumpkins depicting the progression of Jack-o-lantern carving. The Japanese students seemed to enjoy the sharing of several selections from the Biosphere's Insect collection including mounted butterflies and beetles from rainforests around the world. Highlights included a Blue Morpho, a Goliath Beetle and the world's largest grasshopper from the Amazon. More to follow. Photos to follow. Bill Gilluly, Henderson, Nevada
