Hi all, The fourth videoconference between my partner school Nanakuni Elementary and Vanderburg Elementary took place on Thursday, February 1st. One of my three third grade groups presented a collection of artifacts from our Biosphere. A team of two students presented a collection of rainforest textiles. They talked about two dolls dressed in traditional Mayan clothes woven in a Guatemalan weaving cooperative and a piece of 'autobiography' cloth from Guatemala. This cloth includes symbols which tell about significant events in the wearers life. Other fabrics included a loin cloth woven with natural fibers and dyes from the Phillipines and a piece of Tapa cloth; a stamped fiber cloth made from crushed coconuts from America Samoa. Another team presented a collection of musical instruments from rainforest cultures around the world. Included in the presentation were several papers made from natural materials including coffee and banana leaves. A highlight of our presentation was a small selection of jewelry from South America given to my class through a cultural exchange several years ago with a fourth grade class in Limoncocha, Ecuador. The sixth grade class in Japan demonstrated an amazing grasp of English as they gave presentations on holiday traditions and customs. The students shared an amazing variety of artifacts including a small model of Samurai armor, two stricking kimonos, a selection of cakes and sweets related to holidays and traditional dolls associated with Girls Day. Some of the students did a demonstration of calligraphy spelling out Nanakuni Elementary School. I got a glimpse of the technological set-up that Nanakuni Elementary has been using. They have a system for projecting our images to a large screen and amplifying our voices. My set-up includes the two feeds projected on the same small computer screen. I wish we had had a demonstration on how that was done, especially for those of us with little or no help in conducting these conferences. Anyhow...This is the second time I have posted concerning this conference. I hope this one goes through. I will post pictures if it does. Bye, Bill Gilluly
