Video Conference December 19, 2006
For this video conference our classes wanted to share symbols of Christmas. We wanted the classes to see how Christmas was similar in both American and Japan, so as well as the project sharing and conferencing about the fast plants and Rollie-Pollies, we also shared information about the Christmas Holiday. First, My students began by sharing they Christmas item they had brought in for the conference. Some of my students had ornaments, Christmas trees, stuffed animals, and a Santa. The Japanese children would say the English words for each of the items, and my students would then talk about the item, why they wanted to share it with the Japanese class, and why it was a symbol of Christmas. Then, the Japanese class did the same thing. All of the Japanese students shared their Christmas items with my class. My class was surprised at how similar all the items were. I thought it was great for the children to see that the Holiday of Christmas has similarities across the globe and it is not just American children who know about Santa! Haha! After sharing the Holiday items the Japanese children had another quiz for my class about Rollie-Pollies. They asked us questions about how much we thought a Rollie-Pollie weighed, what they preferred to eat, and what kind of environment they like the best. The quiz was fun and my class really liked it because they knew the answers because of raising the Rollie-Pollies in our classroom. My class microphone began to act up, but we did have just enough luck to show the Japanese class our fast plants. The Japanese children like to compare the two different plants because ours are a little smaller than Japanese classes. We planted ours a little late, and therefore they are not as mature as the plants in Japan. My class was excited to see what our plant would look soon because they Japanese class showed up how large there plants have grown. Besides my microphone problems, the conference went really well and both classes enjoyed the meeting. It was both fun and exciting comparing Christmas, the Rollie-Pollies, and the fast plants.
