On Feb. 12 at 5:30 PM US time, we had our final conference with Onominami. There were about 30 parents and students in attendance. The children brought their families. The previous week, I surprised the children with the package that I received from Japan - letters from their bears. Dowell and Onominami, in addition to their pair project, had a teddy bear exchange. The students at Onominami had to bears come home with them over their winter break and the bears wrote letters to the children. My students received their cards from the bears and were thrilled. You had to see their faces. These are cool, street-wise kids who had their mouths wide open seeing the bears and the pictures from Japan. It was priceless.
The children shared the pair project results. I had purchased some frames to display the finished paintings in our school. I couldn't believe how beautiful these soil paintings turned out. Some of the kids even made paint at home when they saw how easy it was.
This experience has been so memorable in so many ways. The one hour went by quickly and it was time to vacate the school at 7:00 PM. The original idea of having a four-way conference did not work. We are not equipped to use skype and yahoo messenger at the same time on our computer. The students and parents left school that evening more than impressed with the technology. What a great experience.
