September 14 was our first video confefence of the year and we had great expectations. We were to focus on the daily lives of students at Kesennuma High School and Callisburg High School. Mr. Kubota and I began having test conferences on September 11 and continually had technical difficulties every day. We finally got online together about five minutes before our conference was to begin. The video portion from our end seemed to be fine and we could hear their audio clearly. However, they could not hear our audio unless I was using a USB headset but then only one person at a time could hear the audio from their side. I switched to external speakers so my kids could hear their presentation but then we never regained the voice from the U.S. side. After several tries we finally showed our Power Point presentation showing scenes from the daily life of Callisburg students and I typed the narration into the message box which was like a chat room.
The Kesennuma students did a wonderful job of showing us their favorite foods. However, we ran out of time and we could not see their photos of daily school life. We are planning to schedule an extra video conference in early October to allow the Kesennuma students to complete their presentation.
Our assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction attended the conference and witnessed our technical problems. He vowed to find money somewhere to purchase better equipment so we will not have to fight these same issues all year long.
Mr. Kubota and I have also agreed to have other test conferences to try to work out technical problems.
My students said the conference was a success and they had a great time. They are eager to complete their water quality study and prepare their presentation for the next conference.
Good luck to everyone else on your first attempts.

Even with the problems it seems like your students had a great time. That's the important thing. Wow- how exciting to have your assistant supt present for the conference. What great support you must have!
