We went on the trip to the Tiger Den camping area. Ms. Humphries told us that she had set up three areas for us to look for bugs. When we got off the bus, we went to the short grass where all the skinny bugs are there. When we finished the short grass area, we had a short break for lunch and got ready for the next one. We went to the area with a lot of leaves. We had to get on our hands and knees to search the area. We found many worms there. After that we went to the tall grassy area. We found lots of spiders and ants there. We also found what looked like a centipede. Later we went to collect soil and take the soil temperature. The soil that was in the sun and short grass had the highest temperature. Also we could see pieces of dead plants in the soil. The soil from the short grass had a lot of clay. We brought the soil back to school with us. After that we left the Tiger Den. We are tired after the long day and tired of grass and dirt but the trip was so fun. Also, we love our teachers because the teachers took us on a short vacation! At school we looked at the dirt. We used tweezers and a magnifying glass. We felt the dirt, looked at it and smelled it. We see short grass soil had less variety of plants in the soil. When we looked at the woodsy area soil we see more leaves. We tested the soil for nitrogen and pH. We also tested it for phosphorus. The liquid changed color to blue. We compared it to the chart to tell us if it had high or low phosphorus. We did learn that the soil from the woodsy area had a higher pH than the grassy area. We think that is because the soil was darker and made of more plants. JEB, DORIAN,AND MARIO
