November came and went, but our Fast Plants just went on living. They were planted August 24th. We are keen to harvest seeds, but that'll have to wait till later this month ot maybe some time in 2007. Our insect collecting in November was limited to gathering bugs to show at our 11/13 videoconference and they were not part of any scientific study. I found a huge potato bug out behind our garden shed and managed to make it a new home in the classroom. That big fella made his escape in the night and has been stalking my students ever since. We also brought in all of our plastic and rubber spiders and bugs to share around. My students enjoy putting such items in sleeping bags while on overnight trips. The pond project is suffering from the rains. Our pond was close to a foot deep in early November. The early rains filled our site with water and made the pond project look like a large rectangular puddle of chocolate milk. My plan was to bring in a pump and purchase rubber boots. That way we could remove most of the water and shovel out the mud. Unfortunately the rain hasn't let up, so we are putting off the dig till we get a break. We did notice that the dirt that covered the cloth membrane that we installed above the gravel sealed the surface and prevented water from getting to the gravel and its 4 inch drainpipe. I was able to get the quarry to donmate another 6 yards of crushed rock. We will remove the dirt and the cloth membrane and use this new pile of crushed 3/4" blue shale to "dome" the 160' drainage system. That's the good news. The bad news is that while I was out Monday to see the doctor, the trucker delivered the six yards of rock to my parking space. There's a moral to this story in there someplace. Our big November event was the Videoconference. It ran from 2:00 till 5:00 on 11/13 PST and is discussed at lenth elsewhere in postings. The SELHi school in Matsuyama was featured and we discussed pond, bugs and fast plants. Sushi and cookies were popular refreshments at the event. We had a positive experience and look forward to the next conference. Cheers, Jim McElroy
