Today's trip to the zoo marks the beginning (I hope) of a longer-term zoo project with the kids. The idea is for both the Nusamai students and my students to become involved in projects at their respective zoos. Since the visit, I have had several conversations with Jim, our zoo director, but things are taking a long time to work out.
About 30 kids went to the zoo today. We timed our visit so that Mr. Tomita, the Nusamai principal, could come with us. Students rode over in small groups with parents. Once there, we had a brief program with one of the zoo docents about migratory birds and endangered species. Jim then took us to see the otter exhibit and the new Delmarva trail. The kids then fanned out with their parent chaperones and a quesionnaire to gather more information about specific species. We will be talking about migratory birds and dissecting owl pellets with our Nusamai partners so part of their job was to do some research in those areas.
