Ah, a missing report...no doubt posted in the forum or as a reply to someone elses entry. Well, when school started in late August I was able to show video, photos and memrobilia from my six weeks in Japan. My students were energized and were anxious to start digging a pond on campus. We had selected a site in the spring that is on the north side of the building. This location allows the shade of the building to retard the evaporation of pond water and affords us a good view of the project from the classroom's north windows. We got ingormation regarding the available sizes of pond liners. That established our pond as being nine feet wide and thirteen feet long. The design involves a one foot perimeter step and a center depth of two feet. This design gives us a shelf for aquatic plants and a center deep enough to afford protection from predators for our plant and animal life. Digging started in September, but progress was slow because the marine terrace material our school is built on is hard as rock when dry. We made some progress by the end of the month, but the sun was hot and the turf was resistant.
