I chose this title thinking about the essays children are continually asked to write upon returning to school after summer break. You all know the topic, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation".
I had the pleasure of spending the day with Omose Elementary School 4th grade students. First, we visited a water treatment plant that cleans water from the Okawa River, the largest river in Kesennuma. We climbed some very steep stairs to actually reach the facility - great exercise. I was completely impressed with how this facility was set up in such an educational manner. We spent a great deal of time at this facility and the students were very attentive.
Next stop would be lunch from the Kesennuma City overlook area. It is up the side of a mountain, and there are dragons that students have created as one enters the trailhead. The students were excited as they compared bentos. I love Japanese Food, but today, being the 4th of July, I decided to do American Foods all day, so I had a salad and a sandwich, but those bentos sure looked yummy.
Final destination for the day would be the wastewater treatment plant. Oh, the smell! Our guide told us that this was not only due to human waste, but to the waste from all the factories, and that fish blood was a major contributor to the odor. Thank goodness for handkerchiefs! I decided to put a wet wipe inside my handkerchief to help alleviate the fumes. It worked! I kept remembering what my mom had always told me about coming upon crime scenes that were smelly, "Don't open your mouth." So I decided this was a time to be quiet! Really, it wasn't unbearable, but give me the pleasure of stretching the story a bit.
