Dear FMF Friends,
What a wonderful orientation in Washington, followed by much sharing and new friendships as our partners, Aki and Shimo, honored us with their knowledge and expertise here in Nuevo, California.
Our school district, Nuview Union Elementary, was so very generous in providing release time for our FMF MTP team members to plan our joint project and work on new technologies to prepare for next year. Frank Robson, our site technology coordinator and Russ Ramsey, district technology coordinator, helped set get our video conferencing equipment working. It was humorous to watch as we called each other from adjoining tables! Not to mention the pictures of all of us taking pictures . . . of each other . . .
Classroom observations at Mountain Shadows Middle School and the district's two elementary schools gave Aki and Shimo a broad view of the diversity of our little rural district. The elementary principals report that they both want to go to Japan! And our students were enriched and enthralled as they learned to make rope sandals, fold origami and were extremely impressed at Shimo's karate demonstration before an all school assembly.
But the fun didn't stop there; visits to the San Bernardino County Museum, the Riverside County Museum, the March Air Force Base Museum, the historic Mission Inn, as well as a local teacher supply store.
Our principal, Manuel Peredia, hosted a dinner for our Latino families complete with mariachi- what a treat! A visit to Medieval Times with our assistant principal Jeff Simmons and his family rounded out a very full week.
One of the highlights was when district superintendent, Dr. Jay Hoffman, brought out his airplane and treated us to an aerial tour and lunch in Santa Monica one day; we flew right by the Hollywood sign and over the Queen Mary docked in Long Beach. That's California!
On Saturday we enjoyed Universal Studios with our counselor, Erika Munoz and Dr. Mike Saito and family. It was hard to believe that the week was coming to an end, but the anticipation of much more to come leaves us all at Mountain Shadows Middle School with the desire to learn more about our counterparts in Japan and a thankfulness for the opportunity to work with such fine educators.
Submitted with appreciation, The Mountain Shadows Team Manuel Peredia, Frank Robson, Lynn Hammonds
PS Pictures will follow as the cable provided in my new camera will not hook into my computer!
