December is a short month for us - only 3 weeks of classes before the long (much awaited) Christmas break. We had hoped to work on our zoo project this month but have run into some delays at the local zoo..... So meanwhile, we spent a couple of Monday afternoons doing the ever-favorite egg drop challenge. Students worked in small groups to use a limited set of materials to create parachutes and landing capsules for their eggs. The first week we concentrated on parachutes, the second week on capsules and the third week combined both. Students found out the mass of their creations and were requird to unwrap the egg and demonstrate that it was not broken within a specified time period after the drop. We held trial runs from the small bleachers at the back of the school. After Christmas the plans are for the fire department to bring the ladder truck and drop them from there. Several eggs have heroically made it through all trials - the kids are quite attached to them and take them home to store between times.
