Washington DC 2006
Last year I thought the Washington DC trip could not be improved upon but this year I was again surprised by how much more I was able to come away with. It may have been the result of a lesser anxiety having already experienced this in 2005. It may have been the fact that I was not meeting strangers but friends that I have not seen in a long time. While one partner, Mr. Okoshi was returning my other partner, Mr. Abe was a teacher that I came to know from my time in the Omose Junior High School.
As a History teacher, Washington has always been a special place for me. I enjoyed seeing again and again being reminded of all the sacrifices and struggles that has come before to make this a great nation. I hope I was able to impart some of the historic context of the Washington landmarks for my partners.
Another new addition was the Bell Multi-Cultural High School. I was pleased to view their new and beautiful facility. I was impressed by the presenters and their vast amount of expertise in the areas of soil, bugs and fast plants. I was able to share this information with the Callisburg Middle School Science teachers who are helping me this year with the pair projects. Their visit to the Callisburg Middle School will be presented in another posting.
My partners made a presentation for the High and Middle School faculties which I am sure raised their interest in this project. Since the presentation I have been offered assistance from Middle School teachers who I know are very busy this time of year with the state mandated testing. More on their presentation will follow in a separate posting.
The Washington DC trip was not only necessary and productive but an excellent way for the Japanese and American teachers to meet and exchange information in a less stressful way than if they met and started to work during the summer with all that has to be done. Questions were answered and the preparations were smoothly accomplished between all the partners.
