Since several of you have asked, below are the directions for making a class flag. Thank you for your interest.

I have made a flag several times now and am always amazed at the creativity of the students. Also, my students are always extremely proud of the flag. While in Japan, I am making a flag to take home with me. My class in Sacramento will make a flag in September, and I will mail it to my partners in Japan. I plan to display the Japanese students flag in the back of my classroom, so they will see it during the video conference.

Materials needed:

fine grit sand paper (cut into quarters)
cotton fabric (about 1 and 1/2 yards for 25 students)
crayons
pencil
markers
black fine point sharpie markers (optional, but useful)
multicultural crayons (optional, but useful)
iron
mirrors (optional, but useful)


1. Students practice drawing themselves on scratch paper.

2. Draw self-portrait on sand paper with pencil. Remind students that their head should take up most of the sandpaper.

3. Students color their drawing with crayons. Tell students to color as hard as possible. If it looks like their crayon is being destroyed in the process, that is a good thing. The more wax on the sandpaper, the better the final product. Also remind students that any place where they can see the brown sand paper will not have color, so there should not be any brown peeking through.

4. Teachers iron the colored sand paper onto the fabric. Steam is not necessary, but I do set the iron as hot as possible. I have not yet burned the sandpaper, so don't worry.

5. Students should write their name below the self-portrait in black marker and color a border around the outside of the self-portrait. It also helps the final product if students use a black sharpie marker to outline their self-portrait.
