They were impressed the most by the value placed by American teachers on classroom discipline. In each of the classes they visited, students seemed to be well-behaved and concentrating on their studies. They also felt that the academic workload in American elementary schools was more than that in Japanese elementary schools. They were particularly impressed by the support given to students at various levels. They thought some of what they saw as teaching methods should be applied to the Japanese education system, for example, having classes in small groups and having volunteer staff to give additional assistance to students. They discussed school, classes and education with American teachers. They also took the opportunity to get to know people in the area, which reaffirmed the importance of knowing different points of view on education.
