2006 Fall Bugs and Soil Collection Sept. 11, 2006 Temp: 90F Wind ESE at 2mph Hum: 42% Dew point 64F Partly Cldy
The Callisburg Middle School eighth grade students conducted their bugs and soil collections today at about 2:00PM. Since my return from Japan it has been over 100F with VERY little rain. Since the ground was so dry this year the cattle grazed on the high grass section of our test site and it now contained only low grass. Therefore, we were only able to obtain samples from the wooded section and the low grass section. While at Omose Junior High, my partners and I agreed that we would both collect samples on September 11, 2006. Backup date in case of rain for the bug collection will be September 21, 2006.
The original plan was to have three collection sites ranging from low grass, high grass and wooded areas. The collection sites will be one meter square. The students will dig and examine depths from 0-5cm and 5-10cm and 10-15cm. The soil will be saved and used for the fast plants. Well the ground was so hard that we only collected samples from 0-5CM and 5-10 CM. A full report on our findings will follow on a future posting.
The students were excited to start the projects this year and since we were able to collect our samples during school hours made it a special treat as well. The students will complete their examination of the soil, write their reports and submit them for posting on XOOPS. Tom Demetrion

Dear Tom,
Well, I just submitted this once, but I don't know what happened! Please convey to your students what a great job they are doing. I definitely plan to intrude upon one of your Japan America Meetings one day soon. I will definitely be showing my students your insect collecting pictures. We won't be far behind you. If you have the opportunity, cruise by the elementary school and take a peek at our monarch caterpillars. We even have chrysalis'. It is a very exciting time at Callisburg ISD! Wouldn't you agree?
Your Walking Partner, Danita
