It was about 50 degrees F. at 1:00 PM. The weather was cool and crisp. We had a bout of rain which left the ground wet but easy to dig in. Armed with spoons, cans and paper cups, 20 fifth grade students went out digging to learn to make paint from soil. I had the directions but had never tried this technique. The students had studied about native Americans in grade 3. What an opportunity to learn to use our natural resources.
The students were skeptical but the members of the Japan Club would do anything that would give them an opportunity to speak to their Japanese friends once again.
I tried to encourage the children to get samples of different colors of soil from different locations. Georgia has a lot of red clay and it is very abundant. The children filled their cups with all kinds of soil and then mixed it together.
We returned to the classroom and left the soil to dry over the weekend. The children had different kinds of paper that I purchased to sketch designs and draw pictures. After having looked at the drawings I brought back from Japan, I told the children to really try to do their best.
