On May 3, 2006, 12 second grade students along with 8 fifth graders went out looking for bugs and to examine the soil. It was approx. 12:45 PM, the temperature was 80 degrees F. There was no wind and very little humidity. It was partly cloudy outside, a perfect day to find bugs. The children were very excited. The first place we looked was near the pond in the front of the school. Our most exciting discovery was a wasp. A fifth grader caught it with the net. Some of the children ran to try to catch a butterfly but were unsuccessful. We then proceeded to the playground which has woods in the back. This was the most successful place for us. They found ants, a grasshopper, a worm, a moth and also a ladybug. The soil was different in color from around the pond. Georgia has a lot of red clay but as you dig deeper, the soil changes color. The soil was moist to the touch. The farther you dig down, the wetter it felt. The colors ranged from brown/black to light brown to a reddish color closer to the surface. We used the data sheet from the Bugs and Soil Booklet but I didn't know how to transfer the sheet to this posting.
I am attaching pictures so you can view our bugs and the children. The children really seemed to enjoy the activity. We did talk about how our results might change when we do our collection in the Fall.
