5/2-4 Jackson School GATE Site Entomology Field Outting- Riparian Habitat
On this particular outting, the students were provided with an opportunity to explore the banks of the Boise River, as well as, a the shores of a series of ponds. I am finding the biggest challenge is convincing the children that we are not racing for a mother lode of insects in one specific spot rather they need to slow down and practice patience, reflection and observation skills. Some children did, however, seem naturally inclined to operate in this manner and for them the experience was immensely gratifying. I have also found that with respect to these reflection skills, the childrens' ages do not seem to correllate with the degree of patience each may demonstrate.
As for insects, we again discovered many species associated with decomposition (isopoda, chilopoda) and were given an opportunity to consider the similarities and implications of finding marine type creatures so far inland.
