The January video conference between Onominami and Dowell took place on the 25th. There were six children and their families in attendance. Enthusiasm for the Japan Club has not diminished. The weather here has gotten very cold and it is difficult for the working parents to come back to school in the evenings.
Unfortunately, the webcam from Dowell was not working. We were able to see and hear our Japanese friends, they could not see us. The American children were still enthusiastic and shared our pair project, soil painting. They outlined the process we used to make the paint. They also shared our celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. It is a big celebration for our students.
The Japanese children continue to amaze us with their English speaking skills. They showed us the soil that they collected from around their school. Apparently there is no red clay like we have in Georgia. The Japanese children shared the teddy bears celebration of the Japanese New Year. My students were excited, as always, to see and hear about their bears. It is amusing because at school, these are the "cool" kids.
Our next conference is Feb. 12. The American children can't wait to meet more American kids and their Japanese partners.
My Japan Club has turned out to be much more successful than I ever imagined. The teachers tell me that the students love the club and can't wait to come to meetings on Friday. They willingly give up their "fun Friday" to do this.
Here are some photos that were taken from the conference.
