On Wednesday, September 27 (US) and Thursday September 28 (JP) Billy Mitchell ES and Shiojirinishi ES had our first joint video conference.
Billy Mitchell students presented a power point about the bugs collected in our area, gave self-introduction speeches, practiced counting in English with the Japanese and competed in a hashi (chopstick) contest.
Overall, my students were very pleased to meet their counterparts in Japan. The next day when we talked as a class about what we liked in the video conference students made comments such as, "It's cool when we laugh together at the same time, but they are so far away" or "I think Japanese sounds cool or beautiful!"
The most exciting part of the video conference was the hashi contest. We practiced for days leading up to the competition. Students had to use hashi to move dry red beans 1 meter from bowl to bowl. At the end we counted our beans. The highest scoring JP team moved 41 beans in one minute. The highest scoring US team moved 40 beans in 1 minute. My students decided that since we are as good as the JP team, then we really are winners!
We are looking forward to the October video conference so we can share about our love of Halloween and begin our joint environmental project.

Great picture! I like the idea of the hashi contest. What fun!
