Digging the initial 9'x13'x8" was a big job in the fall because the marine terrace our campus sits on is rock hard when dry.
Rain stopped construction before the holidays and the hole was filled with water when we returned inJanuary. I was able to get some of the water out by syphoning it with a garden hose. When that scheme was played out, I parted out the waterpump from our ornamental classroom waterfall and decorative pond. With some surgical tubing and the bright orange extension cord I pretty much sucked the hole free of water. What was left looked like about two feet of brownie batter. I purchased some rubber boots for us to use communally to share the goopy job. When that guy gets tired of shoveling, he trades places with the wheelbarrow teamster. Kind of like bucking hay and trading that job for driving... I have some photos of the pond when it was frozen and some ofthe science we used to drain it. Enjoy.
