Hi Jane,
They put the growing watermelon in a special case/box to make it form a square. It's mostly for the sake of consumption as a novelty gift item, and it is very expensive! Maybe you could tell from the excessive packaging, but all of the above fruits are intended to be shipped as gifts. It is a popular practice, especially during the summer. Elissa

That watermelon is so amazing to me. I love to look at the specialty foods in the big department stores but haven:t seen that one, yet...I have actually spent more time looking at food than exploring other areas of Hiroshima! What can I say - I LOVE FOOD and there are so many unique items to look at.

I have heard of growing a tomato in a bottle and growing an apple/pear/fruit in a bottle, but NEVER a watermelon. Amazing...makes me want to try it at home.
 I love those odd ideas...what fun it would be!!!Cynthia
