On October 25, Billy Mitchell ES and Shiojirinishi ES conducted our second joint video conference. The topics for discussion were as follows:
1) River project - introducing our local river and what studies we plan to conduct over the lifetime of the project.
2) Self-introductions - 5 students from BMES and 3 students from SNES gave speeches introducing themselves. Students spoke about what they like to do in their free time, what they enjoy studying at school and what they hope to do in their future.
3) Language Lessons - BMES introduced Halloween to the Japanese students and taught them 3 very important words -- candy, pumpkin and costume. SNES taught us how to say good morning, good afternoon and good evening in Japanese. We also played a game in English where students said keywords and the other school had to decide the name of that occupation.
4) Finally, BMES students were able to ask questions of the Japanese students. The questions were typical 5th and 6th grade questions, "Have you ever eaten a hot dog?" Unfortunately we ran out of time and the Japanese students were not able to ask any questions of us. Perhaps next time we will accomplish this.
For the November video conference, our students will travel to the Folsom Dam and take a tour of the inner workings of the site. We will report to the Japanese students how the dam impacts our river and our community.
