Shotoku Gakuen Junior High School and Mountain Shadows Middle held a wonderful December meeting IN PERSON!!
During our holiday vacation my son Robert, a Japanese language and business student at the University of Hawaii-Manoa in Honolulu, and I met at Narita airport and set out on a week full of adventures in Tokyo, Nikko, and best of all, a visit to Shotoku Gakuen.
Mr. Goro Kobayashi, school principal, the vice-principals Mr. Shoji, Mr. Fujio and Mr. Ito, and MTP partners Aki Kobayashi, Masahiko Sasaki and Satoshi Shimoju arranged a welcome ceremony that featured senior high students playing their new taiko drums, a koto presentation by a very talented high school young lady, and an accomplished speech in English by one of the Shotoku students who had just received an award as a visiting student in the US. My son and I felt so very honored; it will be a treasured memory for us that will last a lifetime.
After a delicious lunch break we returned to meet with the Future Cities Club. The Shotoku students had just learned that they placed second out of all entries from Japan. What an honor! We watched the power point that the winning team prepared for the competition, as well as demonstrations regarding city planning and alternative energy. The meeting concluded with a round of video and picture taking to be shared with the Mountain Shadows International Club later in January.
We are looking forward to continued collaboration throughout the rest of this semester and beyond.
Best Regards and Happy New Year, Lynn Hammonds Mountain Shadows Middle School Nuevo, CA
