November found us fighting the hard ground again. We played the garden hose into the pond to support a student idea that the ground would soften with the addition of water. It sure did. We got mud. It was sticky and wet. Hard on the clothes, shoes and carpet, but softer than the material when dry. It was a change of pace for us and in the same spirit that reckons that you've got to be pretty smart to whitewash a fence, students were anxious to try this new digging technology. The enthusiaum didn't last long, but we enjoyed the burst of effort, albeit a brief one.
