On Thursday, February 8 Mountain Shadows Middle School and Shotoku Gakuen Junior High held their final videoconference with Elisa Sato as our moderator. Our audio and video was the best we have experienced on both sides. At Mountain Shadows we utilized two computers, one for audio with an external speaker system and microphone, and another for the webcam. The only drawback to this setup was that the computers were fairly far apart from each other; as a result, I had to "jog" back and forth between the machines, causing a slight delay as we kept our microphone on mute while listening. This could have been avoided with the assistance of someone to run one of the computers. Most likely a student could have done this, but I did not want them to miss any of the conference. Another detail that could be improved is figuring out a way to have the classroom lighting bright enough for our students to be seen while having it dark enough to be able to see Shotoku students displayed via the projector . . . in retrospect, a better quality projector and webcam would have been great purchases.
Mountain Shadows students started off the conversation with brief comments about what the program has meant to them. Our usually loud students suddenly became quiet and shy as they saw themselves projected lifesize on the screen and realized that they had an audience. But, their comments were heartfelt and they all shared that their lives had been touched by their web meetings with the Shotoku students, whom they have deemed to be "really cool".
Shotoku students shared essays they had written and many delivered their presentation in English- we were impressed!
Our special guest was Mr. Russ Ramsey, Director of Technology and Transportation at Nuview Union School District. Mr. Ramsey's department has provided technical assistance and bus transportation for our International Club throughout the year to make our meetings possible.
We also want to thank our Superintendent, Dr. Jay Hoffman, and our principal, Mr. Manuel Perredia, for supporting our activities, and of course, our JFMFMTP partners, Mr. Shin-ya Shoji, Mr. Aki Kobayashi, and Mr. Satoshi Shimoju, for their enthusiasm and friendship. Mountain Shadows has been enriched by this program!
THANK YOU JAPAN FULBRIGHT MEMORIAL FUND MASTER TEACHER PROGRAM!
