In the morning we met with some of the staff at the Indian River County School District in Vero Beach. Among those staff members was Dr. Fran Adams, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. We discussed what our plans for the weeks and the staff members asked many questions about the schools in Japan.
Later in the morning, we met with Mr. Nate McCollum in his office. Mr. McCollum serves in two positions. He is the Emergency Services Coordinator for Indian River County and is also the the Mayor of Sebastian. He spoke with us about the recent hurricanes and showed us the facilities that were used during hurricanes and emergency situations.
We drove to the Atlantic Ocean at Vero Beach and played in the water a few minutes. Around 11:30 we had lunch at the Bamboo Court, a Japanese Sushi/Thai Restaurant with my daughter, Christine Wirth, who works in an office close to Mr. McCollum.
In the afternoon we went to Sebastian River Middle School. Mr. Hiraoka and Mr. Kamikawa met the principal, Ms. Eileen Shirah, and also met with the technology coordinator, Mr. Darcel Jackman. There was a brief tour of the school before returning to the hotel for a change into more casual clothes.
We met at about 3:45 for a boat tour of the Indian River Lagoon. The tour took us to where the Sebastian River joins the Atlantic Ocean. It lasted about 90 minutes. We had dinner with my wife and Mr. Jackman at Captain Hiram's Restaurant.
