We had a great week in Ann Arbor even though the weather was chilly. On Sunday we toured the shopping district close to the Ann Arbor Bed and Breakfast and The University of Michigan. Monday started with a welcoming ceremony at Allen School including students singing in Japanese and a rousing rendition of happy birthday for Sakurada-sensei. Tuesday was a typical school day at Allen followed by a concert at recently remodeled Hill Auditorium of the University of Michigan Philharmonia Orchestra.
Wednesday was a professional development day for the Ann Arbor Public Schools. We attended a session at Pioneer High School presented by William Daggett on successful schools and future education challenges. That evening we shared the JFMFMTP2006 program with The Ann Arbor Public School District School Board and introduced the Ann Arbor team and our guest educators. On Thursday after school we dined at the Corsa home. Hayashi-sensei and Sakuruda-sensei met the Corsa daughters and Dave's wife, Ann.
On Friday Tomoe Hirano, a student of English from Nagoya joined us as we toured Clague Middle School, hosted by technology coordinator Jeff Gaynor. It was then on to Detroit. We viewed downtown via the People Mover train, strolled the sidewalks in Greektown, observed Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers), and experienced The Heidelberg Project of urban artist Tyree Guyton, who was available to chat with us. Our final stop in Detroit was the Motown Museum, where many of the great pop hits of the 1960s and 1970s were recorded in a converted home: Hitsville U.S.A.
Hayashi-san and Sakurada-san did some final shopping on Saturday morning. That afternoon we visited the Ann Arbor Hands-On Science Children's Museum, searching for ideas for our pair project. Next stop was the University of Michigan Art Museum where we viewed an impressive exhibit of Ando Hiroshige's woodblock prints from The 53 Stages of the Tokaido series. The last stop in the afternoon was to see the final innings of The University of Michigan's baseball team come-from-behind win over Oakland (Michigan) University. Dinner and discussion followed at the Corsa home for our final evening in Ann Arbor. Early on Sunday it was off to Detroit Metropolitan Airport for the short flight to Chicago, followed by the long ride home to Japan.
