On Monday we had a group meeting. We finished a bit early so a group of us went to the Tokyo Dept store to pickup my futon. This afternoon we visited a JrHS and HS run by Tama University. The students in the classrooms were quite rambunctious! We had the chance to talk with students but it was difficult because there was no agenda for them and they were quite shy. We also talked with some of the teachers. For dinner we went to the same restaurant with a larger group. I did eat a bit of chicken and rice.
Tuesday we went to a beautiful museum and participated in a tea ceremony. It is too bad the groups weren't smaller...I think it would have been more meaningful in a smaller setting and easier to be explained to us. We returned to the school and the students took us to the supermarket to explore the products. I think this was an excellent way for the students to practice their english.
This evening Lynn, MiSang, Jane and I went to a festival for a shrine. There was food (I didn't eat any!), music and dancing. The drummers were fun to watch...they were very talented!
Wednesday we hopped on the subway and made our way to Miraikan Science Museum. After a morning meeting and a delicious lunch at Wendy's we met up with our partners. It was good to see Nakamura again. We explored the museum which was awesome. Many science topics related to technology. The model of the ISS was neat to see and had a great video about living in space. I was so intrigued exploring the museum that I forgot to analyze it was deaf access. There was a lot of written language which would be difficult. But there were also a lot of visuals. I do not think...though I can't be sure...that the videos were captioned for the deaf.
Thursday we jammed ourselves into the subway during rush hour! That is definitely a Tokyo experience! We went to the Renaissance Center and met on the 27th floor- had a fantastic view out the window.
It would be interesting to explore the language/brain aspect that was discussed as it relates to deaf students. One would think that if Japanese writing is more conceptual than phonetic, that deaf students would have an easier time reading, but according to Yao and Nakamura, their students have reading difficulties just like ours. It would make an interesting study!

Your photo of the tea ceremony really brought me back to that event. That was my view of the chap with the ladle. He really took his honkey tonk seriously and I wonder what he got out of that experience. Have a super trip. Best, Jim McElroy
