As I move into week two of my adventure, I realize that there are many differences between the Japanese and American education systems, however, the similarities seem to be prevailing.
The first grade class I observed today was reading and interacting with "Okei Kabu" or "The Big Turnip", as any American first grader will tell you, is a fable espousing the value of working cooperatively. Is reading this story a global rite of passage?
The students in the English classes I have been teaching seem to be overcoming a little bit of their reservation, at least in small groups that have been assigned a high energy task to complete. They practiced math computation drills, in English, and then ventured into a question/response game. The amount of English the children already know is "migoto na"!
Yesterday, I experienced the thunderous energy of grade 2 highschool boys practicing kendo. There is a sense of militarism in the physical education at this level. The discipline and focus was remarkable.
